The then P/O Alec McCurdy joined 59 Sqn (RAF Thorney Island) when posted from RAF Andover in Sept 1940 along with three other pilots and their crews (P/O RFW Johnson, Garrard and Knill). McCurdy and Knill were assigned to 'A' flight, who at the time were detached to Aldergrove. He was awarded his DFC and BAR to DFC whilst serving with 18 Sqn. (recon Spitfires) He lives in Berkshire after setting up a furniture making business there after the war.
