Base: Ballykelly After six hours on patrol round position 5330N, 1230W, an oil stdn was seen at 1600, 5338N, 1300W & investigated with high tea, after markers had indicated that it was advancing at 2 knots, 60 deg out of wind. The high tea pattern gave no results but at 1800, 5339N, 1303W a black pipe was seen apparently 3" diameter & 2ft long from surface of the water. Binoculars confirmed the sighting. An attack was made but no results obtained and aircraft left the scene at 1908. _______________________________________________________ Crews on this day: F/L L.M. Francis (capt) - F/O J.C. During WWII, the RAF used three-letter codes to identify their aircraft from a distance. Two large letters were painted before the roundel, which signified the squadron to which the aircraft belonged, and another letter was painted after the roundel which indicated the individual aircraft.
