Base: Ballykelly CLA search carried out in area 63'64'N 01'02'E. At 1230 in posn 64'13'N 01'20'E when "C" was on a northerly Co. (course) a radar contact dead ahead was obtained and shortly afterwards the 2nd pilot sighted a FW.200 Co.015'T only 30 feet above sea level. "C" lost height steadily and a sighting burst was fired by nose gunner fromm 700 yards range, the E/A returning fire and commencing evasive action when range was closed to 100 yards. "C" was not damaged in any way during the action but strikes were claimed on the E/A. At one point strikes which ripped off a section of fabric above the starboard pilot's seat were simultaneous with a very steep dive on the part of the E/A towards the sea. The chase was abandoned at 1300hrs because of the proximity of the Norwegian coast and the fact that the engine was giving trouble. Posn 64'00'N 05'00'E. Landed at Tain after the sortie. Crew on this day: F/L H.G. Cameron (Capt) - F/O D.G. MacGuilp (2nd pilot) - F/S H. Pickering (Nav) - F/O J. Cuickshank - Sgt D.E. Peacock - Sgt T.B. Smith - W/O A.J. Bailey - F/S B. Scott - F/S F.C. Carter.

During WWII, the RAF used three-letter codes to identify their aircraft from a distance. Two large letters were painted before the roundel, which signified the squadron to which the aircraft belonged, and another letter was painted after the roundel which indicated the individual aircraft. Aditionally, there was the individual serial number for each aircraft, which was painted in a much smaller size, usually somewhere at the rear of the aircraft: (more) Codes used by RAF 59 Squadron: PJ Sep 1938 - Sep 1939 |
